History:

The Traditional Parenting Program is a combination of two pilot projects, Traditional Motherhood and Traditional Fatherhood. These two pilot projects were started in 1992 only to be joined to form the Traditional Parenting Program in 1994.

Purpose of the program:

To take necessary steps that will contribute to improving the health and quality of life for First Nations people by:

Teaching parenting skills through the Elders knowledge and;

Assisting First Nations communities in implementing and delivering the Traditional Parenting Program as an outreach service of the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre.

Goals of the Program:

To continually encourage interest in the First Nations Traditional Parenting practice and values by utilizing the knowledge of our Elders.

To provide helpful information to parents on the harmful effects of alcohol, narcotics and nicotine addictions, and nutritional deficiency during pregnancy. With this information we would like to reduce the occurrence of FAS/FAE.

To continually improve the usefulness of and the access to the Traditional Parenting Program in the Yukon, particularly in the First Nations communities.

TPP Manual

Since 1995 the program has been focused on Yukon communities that are interested in delivering and implementing the Traditional Parenting Program. As a tool in this process that staff developed a Traditional Parenting Facilitator’s Manual, to assist in delivering the design of the program.

The information in the manual was collected and approved by the Yukon First Nation Elders. These same Elders have supported and worked in the program from the pilot project stage. Although Yukon First Nation Elders developed the manual information, the manual can be localized in any First Nation community across Canada.

Facilitators Training Workshop

Each year our program hosts a Facilitators Training Workshop.
This workshop consists of five days of training in the areas of setting up agendas, recruiting Elders, recruiting participants, organizing a workshop, survival tools for facilitating and learning how to facilitate a group. The training gives the participants confidence and the ability to speak in front of groups and motivate people towards a healthier, traditional lifestyle. They will be able to facilitate and coordinate their own workshops after completion of the training.
Each participant will receive a copy of the Traditional Parenting Program Facilitator’s Manual. This manual is full of resources and teaching curriculums to facilitate a parenting workshop and is a focal point of the training workshop.
If you are interested in more informatoin about the facilitator’s training workshop or you have any questions, you can contact our office at 867-633-7692.

TPP Workshops

The Traditional Parenting Program (TPP) holds three-day workshops throughout the year. Throughout these workshops participants receive information in regards to preconception, relationships & conception, pregnancy & birth, mother & child, and father & child. During the Elders teachings, a traditional activity is also practiced like sewing, setting fish net, setting snares, berry picking and tanning hides. Our primary goal is to improve the health and social development of families; and promote the Traditional Parenting practices and values within our First Nation communities. All information is delivered by community recognized First Nation Elders.
